Although Confucianism is discussed in Habermas’s Also a History of Philosophy as one of the Axial traditions, its status as a world-view of “immanent transcendence” has not been sufficiently explicated. In order to do so, one needs not only to have more knowledge of different sub-schools and different generations of Confucianism, but also to have a deeply seated participant perspective.

TONG Shijun (童世骏), born in September 1958 in Shanghai, is Chancellor of NYU Shanghai (Shanghai New York University) and Professor of Philosophy ECNU (East China Normal University), Member of the Social Science Committee of MOE (the Ministry of Education), and Foreign Member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters (Det Norske Videnskaps-Akademi). TONG Shijun has published more than 10 books and more than 100 papers in Chinese, English and some other European languages, as well as more than 10 Chinese translations from English or German.
