Keynote Speech: Stephen Kotkin (Stanford University)
“Stalin and Korea: Calculation, Miscalculation, Consequences”
Few individuals have had a greater impact on the fate of the Korean peninsula than Joseph Stalin.It would be wrong to exaggerate Stalin’s role, of course. We must always remain mindful of the agency of Koreans themselves, even when Stalin inserted himself deeply into Korean affairs. The roles of Mao and China and earlier, of Japan, too must be kept in mind. Our understanding of Stalin’s role – before, during, and for the aftermath of the Korean War – has benefitted from the declassification of Soviet documents, the capture of North Korean documents, South Korean materials, and much dedicated scholarly research. What, if anything, remains to be said? What could we possibly learn, or re-learn, from revisiting the Stalin angle of Korea’s war, occupation, liberation, division, and longer-term trajectory? Were alternative outcomes possible? What were the main turning points? What was decisive?
